Ounces to grams converter

One ounce is 28.35 grams, for any ingredient: type ounces or pounds, get grams.

Fractions work: 1 1/2 or ¾.

1 oz

28.35 g

How this is measured

Exact by definition: 1 lb = 453.59237 g, 1 oz = 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g. Source: NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C.

How to convert ounces to grams

Multiply the ounces by 28.349523125, the exact number of grams in an avoirdupois ounce: NIST Handbook 44 defines the pound as 453.59237 grams and the ounce as 1/16 of it. For the kitchen that rounds to 28.35 grams per ounce: 4 ounces is 113.4 grams, 8 ounces 226.8 grams and 16 ounces, one pound, 453.6 grams.

Ounces and grams both measure weight, so the factor is the same for flour, cheese or chocolate, and the converter needs no ingredient. It keeps the exact factor and rounds only the answer it shows.

Converting a recipe from ounces

A recipe written in ounces of weight converts line by line, whatever the ingredient: 2 ounces of butter is 56.7 grams, 6 ounces of chocolate 170.1 grams and 12 ounces of flour 340.2 grams. Lines in fluid ounces are volume, not weight; see below.

Fluid ounces are not weight

The converter's ounce is the weight ounce. A fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume: a US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL, and its weight depends on the liquid, 29.52 grams of water, 30.5 grams of whole milk, 42.38 grams of honey. For liquids measured in fluid ounces, use cups to ounces or cups to mL.

Troy ounces

NIST Handbook 44 also lists the troy ounce, a separate unit of 31.103 grams, used for precious metals in assaying. An ounce in a recipe or on a food package is the avoirdupois ounce, and that is the converter's ounce.

Ounces of an ingredient in cups

Turning ounces of weight into cups needs the ingredient: 1 ounce of all-purpose flour is 3.78 tbsp, 1 ounce of granulated sugar 2.29 tbsp. 4 ounces of all-purpose flour fills ≈ ¾ cup + 3 tbsp. The grams to cups converter takes ounces too.

Questions

How many grams are in 1 ounce?

28.35 grams, from the exact 28.349523125 grams per avoirdupois ounce.

How many grams is 8 oz?

226.8 grams, half a pound.

Is 4 oz the same as 100 grams?

No. As volume, ¼ cup is 2 fl oz and 1 fl oz is 2 tbsp. By weight it depends on the ingredient: 1 ounce of all-purpose flour is ≈ 3 tbsp + 2 tsp + ¼ tsp.

Do 2 tablespoons equal 1 oz?

2 tablespoons are exactly 1 fl oz of volume. By weight, 2 tablespoons of butter are 1 ounce and of all-purpose flour 0.529 ounces.

Why does my label say 28 grams per ounce?

US nutrition labels treat 1 ounce as 28 grams for serving sizes (21 CFR 101.9). That is a labeling convention; the exact factor is the one above.
