How this is measured

Exact by definition: 1 lb = 453.59237 g, 1 oz = 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g. Source: NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C.

How to convert grams to ounces

Divide the grams by 28.349523125. That is the exact number of grams in one avoirdupois ounce, the unit meant whenever a weight is simply called an ounce: the pound is defined as exactly 453.59237 grams and the ounce as 1/16 of a pound (NIST Handbook 44). Rounded for kitchen use, 1 ounce is 28.35 grams and 1 gram is 0.0353 ounces.

No ingredient is needed: grams and ounces both measure weight, so 100 grams of flour and 100 grams of honey are the same number of ounces. The g to oz converter therefore has no ingredient field and never rounds the factor; it rounds only the displayed answer.

Grams to pounds, and pounds to ounces

Above 16 ounces it is easier to read pounds plus ounces. To convert pounds to ounces, multiply by 16: one pound is 16 ounces, 453.6 grams; one kilogram is 2.2 pounds. The converter and the table give pounds and leftover ounces next to the plain ounces, so a kilogram reads both ways.

Ounces to grams: the conversion the other way

To convert ounces to grams, multiply by the same 28.349523125 instead of dividing: 4 ounces is 113.4 grams and 8 ounces 226.8 grams. A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, so 1 kilogram is 35.27 ounces. The ounces to grams converter has its own conversion table, from oz to g.

Kilograms to ounces and pounds to kilograms

In the International System of Units (SI), the metric system, a kilogram is 1,000 grams (NIST Handbook 44), and the pound is defined from it. Kilograms to ounces works like grams to ounces: 1 kilogram is 35.27 ounces, or 2.2 pounds. Pounds to kilograms is the reverse: 1 pound is 0.454 kilograms.

Ounces of weight vs fluid ounces

A fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume, not weight; NIST tells the two apart by calling the weight unit the avoirdupois ounce. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL, and what it weighs depends on what fills it: about 29.52 grams of water at 20 °C. A US cup is 8 fl oz of volume, yet a cup of all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled, weighs 4.23 ounces. When a recipe lists "8 oz" of a dry ingredient, it means weight: put it on the scale, or convert it with the grams to cups converter.

Ounces on food labels

For serving sizes on US nutrition labels, the FDA rule treats 1 ounce in weight as 28 grams (21 CFR 101.9). That is a labeling convention for the serving line, not the exact factor. For your own conversions use the exact 28.35 grams.

Questions

How many grams make 1 oz?

28.35 grams, from the exact 28.349523125 grams per avoirdupois ounce. Two ounces are 56.7 grams, and 16 ounces (one pound) are 453.6 grams.

What is 1 gram equal to?

0.0353 ounces. It takes 28.35 grams to make one ounce.

Is 4 oz the same as 100 grams?

No, 4 ounces is 113.4 grams, and 100 grams is 3.53 ounces. If the recipe gives grams, weigh the grams.

Is 14 grams a half ounce?

Close: half an ounce is 14.17 grams, so 14 grams is just under it (0.494 ounces).

How do I convert grams to ounces in the UK?

The same way. The British avoirdupois pound and ounce are identical to the US ones (NIST Handbook 44, notes on British units), so 1 ounce is 28.35 grams in both countries. Fluid ounces are where they differ: the British fluid ounce is smaller than the US one.

How do I convert grams to ounces in a recipe?

Convert each weight in the ingredient list on its own; the factor is the same for every ingredient. If your scale can show grams, switch it to grams and skip the conversion. Volumes in the same recipe (cups, mL) are a different conversion: see mL to cups.
