How many mL in a teaspoon

A teaspoon is a unit of volume, and 1 teaspoon in US measures is 4.93 milliliters: NIST Handbook 44 defines the measuring teaspoon as ⅓ tablespoon exactly, 1/48 of the US cup of 236.6 milliliters. The teaspoon on US nutrition labels is 5 milliliters (21 CFR 101.9), and so is a metric teaspoon (NIST Special Publication 430), the spoon of recipes written in metric units. Pick the standard under "Cups and spoons" in the converter.

How to convert teaspoons to milliliters

Multiply the teaspoons by the milliliters in one teaspoon: 3 US teaspoons, one tablespoon, are 14.79 milliliters, and 6 teaspoons, which make 1 fluid ounce, are 29.57 milliliters. With 5 mL spoons the arithmetic is whole: ½ teaspoon is 2.5 milliliters, 2 teaspoons 10 milliliters.

Measuring spoons for cooking

In cooking, a measuring spoon gives the volume; fill liquids to the brim of a measuring spoon and level dry ingredients flat; the milliliters are the same either way. NIST Handbook 44 calls the teaspoon an imprecise unit and gives it as 5 milliliters, rounded to the nearest milliliter. A teaspoon from the cutlery drawer is not a measuring spoon, and none of our sources defines its size.
