How this is measured

Exact by definition: 1 US cup = 8 US fl oz = 236.5882365 mL; 1 tbsp = 1/16 cup, 1 tsp = 1/48 cup. Source: NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C.

How many cups in a quart

A US quart is 4 cups. NIST Handbook 44 sets the chain exactly: a cup is half a liquid pint, 2 pints make a quart and 4 quarts make a gallon. So quarts × 4 = cups, and to convert cups to quarts divide by the same number: ½ quart is 2 cups, 2 quarts are 8 cups and 3 quarts are 12 cups.

Quarts and cups both measure volume, so the answer is the same for water, milk, stock or flour, and the converter asks for no ingredient.

How many cups in a pint

A US pint is 2 cups, or 16 fluid ounces; each cup is 8 fluid ounces or 16 tablespoons. Half a pint is 1 cup, and a quart is 2 pints.

How many cups in a gallon

A US gallon is 16 cups: 4 quarts, 8 pints or 128 fluid ounces. Half a gallon is 8 cups.

US and imperial quarts

A British recipe's quart is the imperial quart, 1,137 mL, against 946.4 mL for the US quart. NIST Handbook 44 puts the imperial gallon about 20% above the US gallon, and the imperial pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces where the US pint holds 16 US fluid ounces. Pick the imperial cup standard in the converter and the pints, quarts and gallons switch to imperial ones.

Dry quarts are a different measure

NIST Handbook 44 also lists a dry quart, a separate measure: a US dry quart is 1.101 liters, a US liquid quart 0.946 liter. A measuring cup is half a liquid pint, so the converter's quarts are liquid quarts; for anything sold by the dry quart, weigh it or count the cups you fill from it.

Quarts and liters

A liter is a little more than a US quart: 1.06 quarts, or ≈ 4¼ cups. For metric amounts use mL to cups.
