How this is measured

1 US cup of table salt weighs 288 g. Based on King Arthur's ingredient weight chart.

How to convert grams to teaspoons

Divide the grams by the weight of one level teaspoon of the ingredient. A US teaspoon is 1/48 of a US cup (NIST Handbook 44), so its weight is the sourced weight of a cup ÷ 48. King Arthur Baking's chart gives table salt as 18 grams a tablespoon, so a teaspoon, a third of that, is 6 grams; 6 grams of salt is 1 tsp and 12 grams is 2 tsp. Granulated sugar is lighter per spoon: 33 grams of sugar is 8 tsp.

Under the number, the converter also shows the spoons to fill, the way a recipe would write it.

Grams and teaspoons: a unit of weight and a unit of volume

A gram is a unit of weight, abbreviated as g; a teaspoon is a unit of volume, abbreviated as tsp, and a US customary teaspoon is 4.93 milliliters. Grams measure weight and teaspoons measure volume, so converting between weight and volume takes the ingredient: 1 gram of sugar is 0.242 tsp, while a gram of flour is 0.4 tsp, because a teaspoon of flour weighs 2.5 grams and a teaspoon of granulated sugar 4.13 grams. Tablespoons to teaspoons and cups to teaspoons need no ingredient: a tablespoon is 3 teaspoons and a cup 48 teaspoons.

To convert from grams to teaspoons for any other ingredient, pick it in the converter. In cooking and baking a recipe written by weight rather than volume is the more exact one, so weigh when you can and use the number of teaspoons when there is no scale at hand.

How many teaspoons in a gram of powder

A light powder fills more spoons per gram than salt or sugar. 1 gram of cocoa powder is 0.571 tsp, 1 gram of powdered sugar 0.425 tsp and 1 gram of all-purpose flour 0.4 tsp. Spoons this small are hard to fill the same way twice, so for a gram or two a scale that reads tenths of a gram is the reliable tool.

Grams of baking soda, baking powder and yeast in teaspoons

Recipes that weigh their leaveners convert back to spoons by King Arthur Baking's weights: 6 grams of baking soda is 1 tsp, 8 grams of baking powder is 2 tsp and 9 grams of instant yeast is 3 tsp, the same as 1 tbsp.

Level US teaspoons (1/48 cup). King Arthur Baking gives ½ teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of baking powder and 1 tablespoon of instant yeast by weight; the rest follows from the US spoon.

Teaspoons in an ounce

An ounce is 28.35 grams (NIST), so teaspoons in an ounce are those grams ÷ the grams in a teaspoon: 1 ounce of granulated sugar is 6.87 tsp, of table salt 4.72 tsp and of all-purpose flour 11.34 tsp. Pick oz in "From" for any other ingredient.
