Grams to mL converter
200 grams of granulated sugar is 239 milliliters: pick the ingredient, type the grams, get milliliters.
200 g granulated sugar
239 mL
How this is measured
1 US cup of granulated sugar weighs 198 g. Based on America's Test Kitchen's baking conversion chart: dip and sweep (as America's Test Kitchen's guide to measuring ingredients describes).
How to convert grams to milliliters
Grams measure weight and milliliters measure volume, so when you want to convert one to the other you need one more number: how much a given volume of the ingredient weighs. Divide the grams by the density of the ingredient in grams per milliliter (g/mL), and you have milliliters. This calculator takes that density from a sourced weight of one US cup (236.6 mL) of each ingredient. Granulated sugar is 198 grams a cup by America's Test Kitchen's chart, so 200 grams of sugar fill 239 milliliters. The same 200 grams of honey, which is much denser, take up only 139.6 milliliters.
The formula: mL = grams ÷ (grams per cup ÷ mL per cup). For all-purpose flour at 120 grams a cup (King Arthur Baking), 600 grams is 1,183 milliliters, the same as 5 cups.

Is 1 gram of water 1 mL?
Almost. Water at 20 °C has a density of 0.998 grams per milliliter (NIST Chemistry WebBook), so 500 grams of water is 500.8 milliliters. For cooking that is close enough to read grams of water as milliliters. Nothing else in the chart works that way: milk and heavy cream are a little denser than water, oil lighter, and honey much denser.
100 grams to milliliters: flour, sugar and other dry ingredients
Flour, sugar and other dry ingredients are powders or grains, and a powder has air between its grains, so its weight per milliliter depends on how it was packed into the measure. The cup weights here are for the fill method the source states: King Arthur Baking spoons all-purpose flour into the cup and levels it, at 120 grams a cup; America's Test Kitchen dips the cup into the bag and sweeps it level, at 142 grams. 100 grams of all-purpose flour is 197.2 milliliters spooned, 166.6 milliliters scooped. 100 grams of cocoa powder is 281.7 milliliters and of powdered sugar 209.4 milliliters. For powders a kitchen scale is the accurate way; a measuring cup or jug is the estimate.
Grams to liters
A liter is 1,000 mL, so a kilogram of an ingredient fills its milliliters ÷ 1,000 liters: 1 kg of granulated sugar is 1.19 L, 1 kg of milk 0.97 L. Switch "To" in the converter to L or to cups and spoons.
Questions
How many milliliters are in 160 grams of water?
160.3 milliliters, at the density of water at 20 °C.
Does 1 mL equal 1 gram?
Only for water, and even then approximately: 1 mL of water weighs 0.998 grams at 20 °C. 1 mL of vegetable oil weighs 0.921 grams, of honey 1.43 grams.
What is 250 grams in mL?
It depends on the ingredient: 250 grams of water is 250.4 milliliters, of milk 242.4 milliliters, of butter 260.6 milliliters and of granulated sugar 298.7 milliliters.
How many mL is 311 grams?
311 grams of water is 311.5 milliliters; of all-purpose flour 613.2 milliliters. Pick the ingredient in the converter for any other.
Is 200 mL equal to 200 grams?
For water nearly: 200 mL of water weighs 199.7 grams. For most other ingredients no: 200 mL of granulated sugar weighs 167.4 grams. The mL to grams converter works in that direction.
How do I convert g to mL without a chart?
Divide the grams by the grams in one milliliter of the ingredient. The chart above and the mL to grams page list grams per 100 mL for every ingredient we have a sourced weight for.
