Oven temperature conversion

180 °C is 356 °F: type a temperature or a gas mark, pick the units, get the other.

Degrees or a gas mark: 180, 350, 4 or ½.

180 °C

356 °F

How this is measured

Exact by definition: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8. Source: NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C.

Oven temperature conversion: how to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

When you need to convert a recipe's oven temperature, two formulas cover it. Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32 and divide by 1.8. Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 1.8 and add 32. These are the exact conversion equations in NIST Handbook 44, so the converter gives the true number: 180 °C is 356 degrees Fahrenheit and 350 °F is 176.7 degrees Celsius.

The exact number and the oven dial

An exact conversion may not land on a mark of your oven dial. 180 °C is 356 °F, and 350 °F is 176.7 °C, so the two are close but not the same temperature. Set the nearest mark your oven has and let the recipe's doneness test decide; the converter gives the number, not a recommended setting.

Gas marks

British and Irish recipes often give a gas mark instead of degrees. Gas marks have no exact conversion; the usual gas mark scale runs from ¼ to 9 in steps of 25 °F, and the converter uses one Fahrenheit and one Celsius value per mark: gas mark 4 is 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius, gas mark 6 is 200 degrees Celsius. Pick "Gas" in "From" or "To"; a temperature between two marks gives the nearest one, marked "≈", so 175 °C reads as ≈ Gas mark 4.

The usual gas mark scale. Fan and convection columns by the common rule of thumb: about 20 °C or 25 °F lower.

Set fan oven temperatures lower: fan and convection ovens

A fan (convection) oven cooks faster at the same setting. The common rule of thumb is to set it about 20 °C or 25 °F lower than a recipe written for a conventional oven: 200 °C becomes 180 °C fan, and 350 °F becomes 325 °F convection. Pick "°C fan" or "°F fan" (a convection oven) in the converter to apply it. Ovens differ, and some recipes already give the fan temperature, so check what yours says and let the doneness test decide.

Questions

Is 180 °C the same as 350 °F?

Not exactly: 180 °C is 356 °F, and 350 °F is 176.7 °C.
