How this is measured

1 US cup of milk weighs 244 g. Based on USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy). Whole milk.

Other values: King Arthur, fresh milk, 227 g a cup: 2.15 cups (King Arthur lists 227 g (8 oz) for a cup of milk, as it does for water and cream, without naming the kind of milk); USDA, 2% milk, 244 g a cup: 2 cups (Reduced-fat (2%) milk, not whole); USDA, skim milk, 245 g a cup: 1.99 cups (Nonfat (skim) milk, not whole).

How many grams in 1 cup of milk?

One US cup of whole milk weighs 244 grams, or 8.61 ounces (USDA). That is the value the converter uses for milk, so 488 grams of milk is 2 cups, 732 grams is 3 cups, and a tablespoon of milk weighs 15.25 grams.

By volume a US cup is 236.6 milliliters of milk. Milk is a little heavier than water, so a cup of milk in grams is a few grams more than its milliliters: 100 mL of whole milk weighs 103.1 grams.

Whole, 2% and skim milk

USDA lists nearly the same cup weight for whole milk, reduced-fat (2%) milk, 244 grams, and nonfat (skim) milk, 245 grams, so one milk serves all three in the converter. King Arthur Baking's chart lists 227 grams (8 ounces) for a cup of milk, as it does for water and cream, without naming the kind of milk:

Our value is the one the converter uses; the others are what other sources list for a US cup.

Buttermilk

A cup of low-fat cultured buttermilk weighs 245 grams (USDA), the value the converter uses, and USDA's survey foods list 244 grams. King Arthur Baking's chart lists 227 grams (8 ounces), as it does for milk and water. 490 grams of buttermilk is 2 cups.

Soy, almond and oat milk

USDA's survey foods list 244 grams for a cup of soy milk, of almond milk and of oat milk, the same as cow's milk, and the converter uses that value for all three:

USDA's older SR Legacy table gives 243 grams for soymilk and 262 grams for shelf-stable unsweetened almond milk; neither USDA record says why that almond milk is heavier. Brands differ, so a carton's label is the best guide for its own milk.

Milk, water, cream and honey by the cup

Liquids do not all weigh the same per cup. A US cup of water is 236.2 grams, of whole milk 244 grams, of heavy cream 238 grams and of honey 339 grams. The water converter and the ingredient weight chart have the rest.
